LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Homeless advocates in Louisville are working to help people stay warm and dry as cold weather moves across the country.
The Arthur Street Hotel has more than 75 people staying there in hotel-style transitional housing, helping to get people off the streets. Susan Buchino, executive director of CARE at the Arthur Street Hotel, said they fear there won’t be enough shelter for everyone who needs it.
“This is the kind of weather where we will lose people,” she said.
On Friday morning, SOS — a global health nonprofit based in Louisville — brought two trucks to deliver more than 3,500 pounds of personal hygiene products, gloves and other items.
Denise Spears, president and CEO of SOS International, said when they heard the forecast for next week, they immediately reached out to the Arthur Street Hotel to help them be prepared.
“These are all critical supplies,” Buchino said of the SOS shipment. “People are on the street. There are not enough shelter beds in this city for everyone. So even when white flag opens up this week as it gets colder, there will still be people who have to stay outside.”
The outreach team from the hotel said it’s trying to reach those people still on the streets and make sure they have the supplies they need to stay warm.
